Chapter 8. Conclusion: Focus, Test, and Believe

1.     What method did Georgia Sadler find to tip her diabetes/cancer campaign?  Would you classify her as a connector, maven, or salesman?

Georgia Sadler used beauty salons and hairstylists to get her message across to women.  The beauty salons were a place where women spent quite a bit of time.  As they spent time there they conversed with their hairstylists in a casual, gossipy manner that which Georgia used as the format for conveying her information.  I would classify Georgia as a salesman because she recognized her target audience (women) and identified their preferred way to receive information (gossip and in a salon where they had to spend time anyway).

2.     What is Gladwell’s view of a Band-Aid solution?

Gladwell’s view of a Band-Aid solution is that it “is an inexpensive, convenient, and remarkably versatile solution to an astonishing array of problems” and is sometimes needed.

3.     What two lessons does he mention from the Tipping Point?

The first lesson of the Tipping Point is that “starting epidemics reauires concentrating resources on a few key areas.”  The second lesson of the Tipping Point is that “the world—much as we want it to—does not accord with our intuition.

Afterword. Tipping Point Lessons from the Real World

1.     How might the AIDS epidemic have been better combated if it had been examined as a social phenomenon?

The AIDS epidemic may have been better combated if it had been examined as a social phenomenon because the focus would have been “on those beliefs and social structures and poverty, and prejudices and personalities that may have made it “tip” towards going away.

2.     What does Gladwell mean when he writes that “we are about to enter the age of word of mouth” (on page 264)?

He means that as we enter a time of “New Economy” when we are going to have to do more with less we are going to rely more on people, who have already done more with less.

3.     What does Gladwell mean by the phrase “the Age of Isolation”?

The “Age of Isolation” according to Gladwell means that we have helped adolosecents in particular isolate themselves from adults by supporting their ability to interact with each other by way of the cell phone, internet, etc. when before they were interacting with adults.

4.     What is Gladwell’s take on school shootings like Columbine?

Gladwell’s take on school shootings like Columbine is that “it is a mistake to try to make sense of these kinds of actions by blaming influences of the outside world—in terms of broader trends of violence and social breakdown.”

5.     What is the “fax effect”?  How does “immunity” negate the “fax effect”?

The “fax effect” is when “power and value now come from abundance.  “Immunity” negates the “fax effect” by eliminating the power and value from abundance by overwhelming their clients.
