Chapter 8. Conclusion: Focus, Test, and Believe

1.     What method did Georgia Sadler find to tip her diabetes/cancer campaign?

She found the place where women were comfortable, were occupied with an activity but would listen and interact and had a new messenger (Connector/Salesman/Maven).  The hair salon!

Would you classify her as a connector, maven, or salesman?

Sadler was all three plus she found other stylists that were good at it, too.

2.     What is Gladwell’s view of a Band-Aid solution?

It should not be viewed as a negative connotation but as best kind of solution using limited amount of effort, time and cost.

3.     What two lessons does he mention from the Tipping Point?

     1) We reframe the way we think about the world.

     2) The use of our intuition.

Afterword. Tipping Point Lessons from the Real World

1.     How might the AIDS epidemic have been better combated if it had been examined as a social phenomenon?

After reading this book, I think and Gladwell thinks that the spread of AIDS could have been halted more effectively (and saving many more lives) by reframing the way we were thinking and getting away from the science/medical and dealing with the 'social' aspect of the disease.

2.     What does Gladwell mean when he writes that “we are about to enter the age of word of mouth” (on page 264)?

Via technology, we as humans have actually distanced ourselves more from each other in the context of  being somewhere in the flesh.  The rise of isolation, the rise of immunity to communication and the critical role of the Maven in the modern economy.  In the 1700's, with exploration into the New World, people were isolated, had a lack of good communication and trade was different on the frontier but now the 'frontier' is of a different ilk.  Each person is making their own islands and selective on who they let on it!

3.     What does Gladwell mean by the phrase “the Age of Isolation”?

It is an internal script  that only makes sense in the closed world that teenagers inhabit.  It is an evolution that is taking place with our teenagers into a world of isolation.

4.     What is Gladwell’s take on school shootings like Columbine?

These kinds of shootings or attempts happened when violence among students was down, not up.  He feels they are actions of isolation.

5.     What is the “fax effect”?

The Law of Plentitude - Power and value now come from abundance of some things.  A fax machine is really not powerful until enough consumers are using them so that they are of value to many.

How does “immunity” negate the “fax effect”?

When something becomes too big and 'unwieldy', we are only interested in using it selectively.  Thank goodness for caller ID!  Some things become another invasion of privacy.  We become immune to telephone calls, e-mails, Facebook messages, etc. - we once again begin to prioritize what we let into 'our world'.
